Times Definitely Have NOT Changed

by Joe Pulcinella

From Leon's Almanac of Political History (for Nov 12, my birthday):

1933: In the German general election, 92% of electors are recorded as voting for Nazi candidates, with 96% of the electorate turning out to vote. (From The Encarta® 2000 New World Timeline © Copyright 1998, Helicon Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.) [And in the USA, 2001, polls show that a majority of the population supports suspension of civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution, as long as "helps in the fight of the War on Terrorism". Almost 50% agree that torturing of the accused would be OK.]

Well, at least there were powers capable and willing to stop Hitler back then. What do we do now?

Our Founding Fathers were very prescient in that they knew that any powers given to a government will surely be used.

HA! But I can top you; (February 28,) 1933 President Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler invoke Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, which permits the suspension of civil liberties in time of national emergency. This Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of the People and State abrogates the following constitutional protections: Free expression of opinion, Freedom of the press, Right of assembly and association, Right to privacy of postal and electronic communications, Protection against unlawful searches and seizures, Individual property rights, States' right of self-government. A supplemental decree creates the SA (Storm Troops) and SS (Special Security) Federal police agencies. http://perspicuity.net/cgi/disp_day.cgi?2&28&2004
