Computer System Cost City Millions
by Joe Pulcinella
The Washington Times reports that DC's state-of-the-art emergency comminucations system for the fire department has blown it's budget six-fold.
The District has lost between $4 million and $6 million on a mobile computer system for the fire department, the cost of which has swelled as much as sixfold during a year and a half of missed deadlines for implementing it.
Sounds eerily like Philly's wall-to-wall WiFi plan which should secure its position as an official ward of the Commonwealth of PA (if it isn't already). Philadelphia's government is packed solid with people who know nothing about managing their own checkbooks let alone a major city. Which leads us back to DC:
The mobile computer system project was initiated during the tenure of former Fire Chief Ronnie Few, who resigned in May 2002 after inaccuracies were found in his resume and those of his three top appointees.
