More Mafia Fun!
by Vince?Daliessio
Here in New York, the history of La Cosa Nostra (literally "this thing of ours") is ever-present. In researching some background on the Bernard Kerik nomination, I came across this article from the New York Daily News. In it, we find our old friend Alphonse "Allie Shades" Malangone, who you?may remember from Takedown, a GREAT book about the famous dismantling of the Mafia's New York City?garbage cartel. Apparently, Stephen Capone, hired by the FBI to dig for mob bodies in Ozone Park, is a former associate of Allie Shades. Small world indeed!
More interesting mob stories here.

"Takedown" really made me feel sorry for Allie Shades by the end. He's really one of the last of the breed of 'gentleman' mobster.
I worked in the nightclub that was secretly owned by "Allie Shades." There were seven owners on the books, but he was the real owner. He was actually pretty nice to me. I knew he was connected but I never knew how high up he was, until he was arrested in connection with mob control of the Fulton Fish Market. One day I was in a book store and I pick up Takedown, I was floored when I turned to the pictures and saw Allie Shades. He is portrayed in the book as the smartest, funniest and most charming of the gangsters the author encountered undercover. I also learned that about six months after I stopped working at the nightclub, it was put under surveillance.
