Liberty and Vino

by Steve Mastro

There is a very important case being presented at the Supreme Court regarding sales of wine over state lines.  It seems the repealing of Prohibition came with the proviso that states could heavily regulate how wine and spirits were sold.

This shows how they still dont get it, though:

Allowing Internet sales of a highly dangerous and highly regulated product, such as alcohol or tobacco, is a genuine concern for state regulators,'' attorneys general from Ohio and 32 other states argue in a friend-of-the-court brief backing Michigan.

Are they kidding???

The whole article is required reading for anyone interested in the insanity of regulation.

This case is about naked protection of monopolistic distributors, particularly state-owned ones. That's it - no more. I can get wine delivered (adult signature required!) by FedEx from an in-state distributor, but not from one in an adjacent state. What other legitimate reason could there be?
