Just saw this quote on the Cato site:

[John F.] Kerry said that even with the August gain the nation had still lost 1.6 million jobs since Bush took office.... The White House said that the job loss is only 900,000 when government employment is considered.

Leaving aside the inanity of the statement, the situation illustrates the absurdity of counting on government to do anything positive for the employment environment. Even while reducing the number of government workers (as the numbers imply, but not really, because all the numbers are fudged), the deficit rose to a staggering $400 billion plus.
