Military Imperialism Abroad, Militarized Cops At Home

by Vince Daliessio

Our imperial adventures abroad continue having a terrible impact at home. We wrote previously about a tasering incident here, and opined that what we were observing was an increasing militarization of local and state police forces.

Now we have seen, on the TV news this morning, video of a group of New Orleans cops literally beating a 64-year-old man's brains out;

Sixty-four year old retired elementary school teacher   Robert Davis, allegedly arrested for public drunkenness (har har har) on a street in New Orleans' infamously lubricated French Quarter, was punched, kicked, and his head slammed into a masonry wall and the sidewalk. The incident was so obviously illegal, a mounted policeman tried to obscure a cameraman's view of the incident, then one of the cops grabbed an AP producer and proceded to kick the crap out of HIM.

It's sickening. But you, gentle reader, are lucky - I can't find the video I saw this morning where Mr. Davis, covered in blood, appears to be trying to hold his own skull together.

I've been meaning to write an article on some things that Americans have come to regard as simply "Life in these United States" and how to recognize them as signs that we live in a despotism. Without giving away the plot, it will center around an acid test of replacing the well-meaning intentions of our own government with another government that you already know is horrible. F'rinstance, for those who think that this treatment was somehow justifiable, ask yourself if it was any better that he was beaten by American cops rather than, say, Chinese soldiers. An act is an act regardless of who's perpetrating it. I'll stop there.
