Compare Private vs Government
Here's an article that pretty clearly states what the role of private charities?and government should be in emergency responses.? It makes a difference in what is charity and what is simply civil order.? The part about charity is particularly relevant.? Here's a couple of snipets for those who don't want to read the whole thing.
Voluntary sacrifice is what makes philanthropy a virtuous act.
As we hear calls for a "compassionate" response to the victims of this tragedy, it is important to remember that you can't be compassionate with other people's money. This difference is as simple as the difference between my reaching into my pocket for money to help someone in need and my reaching into your pocket for the same purpose. The former is charity - the latter is not.
Just ask yourself, who has done a better job at timely and effective response, FEMA or the American Red Cross?
It also mentions that the government should take care of somethings such as search and rescue and?infrastructure but it warns of the dangers of always turning to the government, especially the federal government, in emergencies.?
If only our fearless leaders would take a short break from the check writing and consider what would be the most effective response we may not end up spending $100 billion.
