Fence To Go Up on Median of NJ's Route 38

OK, when is the state going to admit that it is at fault, along with the trucking company that knocked down the bridge?;

The state has decided to build a fence along the divider on Route 38 in Cherry Hill, after a teenager was killed trying to cross the highway last Friday.

So, you are going to take a stretch of highway where pedestrians are being killed because they are too slow crossing the highway, and you are going to add a fence to retard their progress even further. Nice going!

Days after 13-year-old Wayne Jackson was struck and killed, work is beginning to put up a four-foot fence atop the three-foot-high divider on Route 38, between Haddonfield and Church Roads.

DOT commissioner Jack Lettiere says a short-term fix is needed to keep people from trying to cross Route 38 to get from the movie theater to the mall:

Aren't pedestrians citizens? Don't they pay taxes? Shouldn't they have the right to cross the road without being murdered? (Joe, is this guy related to your wife?)

 "On the fence itself we're going to be putting up signs that give the warning to any kind of pedestrian that will be using the crosswalk not to cross at that location and to use a lighted cross facility up and down the highway where we have them."

What about the illiterate? Aren't they a large proportion of the pedestrian-only population?

The fence should be in place by the end of July.

Long-term, Lettiere says, the state has been studying a number of options, including plans to rebuild a pedestrian overpass knocked down by a truck five years ago.

Where was the state for the past four years? Did they think that just because an accident knocked the bridge down, it was no longer needed? Did the trucker's insurance carrier pay to have the bridge rebuilt? What happened to the money - did Christie Witless take it?
